10 Reasons You Should Foster a Cat

When I'm not cruising I'm crafting. Hence the Cruising & Crafting slogan. But I'm really cruising and crafting and catting.

If you've been around the blog for a while you know I've been fostering kittens for the last few years. I work with Simply Cats, Boise's cageless, no-kill feline shelter. Baby kitties who are too small to be adopted come into my home where I get to have kitten fun until the babies are grown up enough for spaying or neutering. When that time comes they head back to Simply Cats, get scheduled for surgery, and wind up on the adoption floor a few short days later.

Want to know more about why you should foster a cat? Check out my video:

Want to help contribute to the work I do with foster kittens? I have an Amazon wish list right here. These are the things I use again and again, year after year. With daily laundry and frequent cleaning, items have to be replaced often. I’d love anything you’d be willing to send my way!

Foster Friday

I'm not sure why foster kitties think it's okay to pull fabric out of my cubbies. Need a hidden space for a nap, perhaps? Can't ask Crepe. She's a bit tired.

Foster Friday

You know it's going to be a crazy Foster Friday when these things happen before nine in the morning:

Shortstack, Flapjack, and Cupcake find my box of gift bags and proceed to spread them out around the sewing room.

Buttermilk digs into the bottle caps I'm using for a Tutorial Tuesday project.

Buttermilk and Flapjack decide to dig into the quilts I'm working on for charity.

And what about Crepe? I found her in the garbage can. Guess I'll be hiding that.
Way too dangerous, girl!

They then sent Cupcake to apologize for it all. She did. And then decided to walk across my keyboard as I was typing on the computer.
Crazy Foster Friday.

Foster Friday

If Cupcake would wake up and get off the quilt I'm working on I'm sure she'd be happy today was another Foster Friday.
And Shortstack? I think he's just ready to give someone a hug.

What about Flapjack? How does he feel about Foster Friday? He's a bit too occupied to answer, trying to get in one more feeding with Mama Sienna.
Today Mama Sienna heads back to Simply Cats all by herself. She'll be fixed and available for adoption soon. If you're in the Boise area and looking for the sweetest cat around, Mama Sienna is your girl!

It'll still be a while before the kitties leave me, thank goodness. They are too much fun.

Foster Friday

Here's another peek at my foster kitties and their mama. We're calling them the Breakfast Club. It's a lively one right now in this foster family household.

Cabo San Lucas

Hello from Cabo San Lucas! It is another beautiful day.
Most of the time when I come to Cabo, I go snorkeling. While the snorkel by zodiac raft is the best of all the snorkel excursions (believe me, I’ve done them all several times over), for the first time ever here I decided to go with a non-snorkel tour.

I cleared it with hubby last night. He felt comfortable enough on the ship with me going off and doing my own thing. So I did.

Whale watching it was. I’ve enjoyed whale watching in Alaska year after year and in Hawaii as well. But I do have to say, today beat them all. When you are partaking in a rum punch before 9:30 am as you pass by El Arco the day can only get better.
And by choosing to sit downstairs by the large open windows, you can avoid the 100+ other people piled on top of each other upstairs and not have to fight for a spot to see all the creatures.
Plenty of open windows and clear views.
Just hitching a ride.
Wait, me too!
The dolphins were nearby, too.
I could describe everything I saw in terms of whales, but I’ll just leave you with the pictures. You can add your own words. But boy, they sure make a big splash and a loud noise when breaching.

If this was the last port of our cruising year it would be a great way to go out. But we have one more of these cruises. Two more sea days to get us to San Francisco and then we’ll be starting this same itinerary all over again.
Life is flippin’ awesome.

5 Things to do in Ketchikan, Alaska

It's Wanderlust Wednesday and today we're talking about five different activities you can do when visiting the cruise ship port of Ketchikan, Alaska on your next Alaskan cruise.

5 things to do in Ketchikan, Alaska

Since Ketchikan is one of the most southernmost cities in Alaska, it's usually the first port of call for northbound cruise ships. Ketchikan has been dubbed the Rain Capital of Alaska. We've been to Ketchikan over a dozen times and have been lucky with the weather. But rain or shine, there is plenty to do in port.

1. Take in a lumberjack show. Lots of strength and skill on display with a hefty dose of audience participation. The cheering and rooting kind, not the axe-throwing kind.

2. Ketchikan has the largest collection of totem poles in the world so visit one of the totem pole parks. There are several to choose from. Depending on the park you may be able to do a self-guided tour, enter a clan house, view carving in action, or watch Native dancers.

3. A seaplane to Misty Fjords National Monument provides plenty of opportunities for oohs and aahs. Flights are weather-dependent.

4. Visit Creek Street. The historic boardwalk was a Red Light District during the Gold Rush. You'll find shopping, food, and salmon-watching spots along the way.

5. Ketchikan is also known as the Salmon Capital of the World, so head out to catch your limit. The fish are abundant so there is no need to go into deep, churning ocean waters. And the fishing charters work with a local cannery to process your fish and send them back home for you.

Look at the pretty salmon we had shipped home.

Enjoy Ketchikan!

5 Things to do in Juneau, Alaska

Today we're talking about five different activities you can do when visiting the cruise port of Juneau, Alaska on your Alaskan cruise.

5 things to do in Juneau, Alaska

Juneau, the capital city of Alaska, is landlocked. While you can drive all around Juneau, the only way in or out is by boat or plane. It's also big. The Juneau area covers over 3,200 square miles and covers almost as much land as the states of Delaware and Rhode Island put together. With that much space there is plenty to do.

1. Take a seaplane to see the glaciers from above. Glacier flighseeing tours give you a birds eye look at the numerous glaciers in the area. They are quite popular - and a bit expensive.

2. If you'd like another way to see a glacier, check out Mendenhall Glacier. Ship excursions and independent tours go to Mendenhall. If you want the cheapest way to get there, a city bus can get you within a mile or so of the visitor center.

There are several trails around Mendenhall Lake, where the 13 mile long glacier ends. Our favorite one leads to Nugget Falls. More details about the walk to Nugget Falls can be found here.

3. Take a ride up the Mt. Roberts Tramway. Soaring 1,800 feet in the air, you'll get great views of the Juneau and Gastineau Channels. At the top you'll find observation areas, a nature center, gift shop, theater, a place to eat, and hiking trails.

 4. Go on a whale watching tour. The area is abundant with whales. Flukes? Yep. Breaching? If you're lucky.

5. Eat like a local. Breweries and restaurants and cafes. Fish and pizza and local beer. The ship docks within walking distance to tasty food and drink.

How about a Dungeness crab BLT from the Rookery Cafe?

Enjoy Juneau!
